An Introduction to Graduate Program

Having started its graduate program early in 1956, and been authorized by the State Council to confer doctor's and master's degree in 1981, XAUAT is one of the first higher education institutions to offer postgraduate programs. So far, nearly 10,000 quality talents with master's or doctor's degrees from this university have credited XAUAT with a prominent name in such disciplines as civil engineering, architecture, environmental engineering, and material science.

With 4 post-doctoral research stations respectively in architecture, civil engineering, environmental science & engineering, and material science & engineering, 3 national key disciplines in structural engineering ， environmental engineering, and architectural design, this university is authorized to grant degrees in 7 general disciplines. Namely, XAUAT confers doctoral programs in five first-level disciplines, and 25 second-level disciplines, master program in 20 first-level disciplines, and 103 second-level disciplines. There is a total of 137 tutors of doctoral candidates, 631 supervisors of master candidates, 7 of whom are academician in the Chinese Academy of Engineering. And over 5,000 students are in pursuit of their master's or doctor's degrees.

Sticking to the development guideline of “developing steadily, enhancing quality, fostering innovation, and nurturing discipline characteristic”, and being committed to exploring and advancing the approaches in talent-cultivation, this multi-disciplinary university has developed its post-graduate education in an unprecedented scale and speed.

Great importance is attached to practice and application. Advocating ”teaching on the spot” and “practicing on the job”, the faculty is in regular and constant partnership with the enterprises, and involves the graduate students in various academic and industrial activities such as doing experiments, drafting plans, or writing thesis, so as to consolidate the students' basic skills, engineering capability, comprehensive capability, and vocational skills. The stress both on theory and practice has earned the university and its graduates a nationwide reputation. Talents trained in XAUAT now fill such important posts as chief engineer or president in over 30 major designing institutes in civil engineering and metallurgical engineering, like the Architectural Designing Institute in Northeast China, the Beijing General Research Institutes of Iron and Steel. XAUAT graduates are generally well accepted with their solid foundation, high capability in learning and practicing, team work, and professional adaptability.

Gradually XAUAT defined and established a model of training objective as “fostering high-quality innovative engineering professionals”, through years of ardent efforts in constructing the “Five Projects” cultivation system and interacting teaching and practice. In 2009, the research findings elaborating such a model were granted the outstanding prize in the Provincial Award for Teaching Achievement and the second prize in the State Award for Teaching Achievement.

Ratified by the evaluating experts and the Ministry of Education, XAUAT is enrolled in the list of 64 experimental units in Discipline Reform of Graduate education in Oct. 2010. The inception of the experimental work on comprehensive reform of the academic graduate education was approved in two academic fields: architecture and civil engineering. The number of the fields that are ratified leads the pack of the competitors nationwide and ties for first place among all the universities in Shaanxi. In the same year, together with other 49 universities, XAUAT won the title of the Most Innovative University in Graduate Program in Engineering.

After decades of construction and development, the post-graduate program in XAUAT is now endowed with a rationalized discipline framework and managerial system, an improved talent-nurturing condition, and an increasing innovative capacity of its student. The whole faculty is confident that the graduate program in XAUAT is to scale new heights in the new epoch.
