College of Architecture

The College of Architecture traces its origins to the Department of Architecture of Northeastern University founded in 1928 and the Construction Department of Southern Jiangsu Engineering College established in 1923. The two predecessor institutions cultivated China’s first generation of domestically trained architects and jointly pioneered modern architectural education in China.

The College currently has more than 200 full-time faculty members. Among them are 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 14 leading scholars at the national level. It offers 5 undergraduate programs: Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, Historic Building Conservation Engineering, and Urban Design. The College has doctoral programs in two first-level disciplines: Architecture and Urban and Rural Planning, as well as a first-class discipline postdoctoral research station. It is the only institution in Northwest China authorized to offer bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral education in Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, and Landscape Architecture. The College currently enrolls 1,757 undergraduates, 977 master’s students and 278 doctoral students.

The college offers a master’s dual-degree program with Politecnico di Milano (Italy), conducts joint training programs with more than 10 universities including Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), and carries out collaborative design studios with over 20 universities such as Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands). Our students have claimed the highest award three times in the World University Students’ Architectural Design Competition organized by the International Union of Architects (UIA), receiving a total of 25 awards and making the College the most awarded Chinese university in the competition.

Upholding its distinguished academic traditions, the College has remained rooted in Western China, served the nation, and maintained an international outlook. Supported by national platforms including the State Key Laboratory of Green Building and the Collaborative Innovation Center for Western Green Buildings, the College engages with international disciplinary frontiers, values fundamental research, and responds to major national needs. It has gradually developed distinctive disciplinary research directions and academic teams in green building, cultural heritage conservation, urban and regional planning in Western China, rural planning and construction in Western China, historical theories of Chinese landscape culture and landscape design, as well as livable environment and ecological design for urban and rural areas in Northwest China.
