The State Key Laboratory of Green Building was approved for construction by the Ministry of Science and Technology in March 2023. Focusing on the national major strategic needs of achieving the 'dual carbon' goal in the construction industry and building a healthy and livable urban and rural human settlement environment, the laboratory takes the research, development and promotion of new models, new technologies and new products of green building suitable for different natural and social conditions in China as its main tasks. Adhering to the core philosophy of climate adaptation, local conditions, tradition inheritance and green development for a long time, it continuously seeks action plans and technical paths to reduce carbon emissions and energy and resource consumption of buildings in China.
The laboratory has successively built national-level scientific research platforms such as the Ministry of Education-Province Co-construction Collaborative Innovation Center and the Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Base ('111 Base'), and has built a distinctive research team with a reasonable echelon level. The team has won the 2023 National Science and Technology Progress Award Second Class, the honorary awards such as 'the First Batch of Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams of the Ministry of Education' and 'Advanced Collective of the National Education System'.

The base was approved for establishment by the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology in October 2015, and was re-recognized as a national-level international science and technology cooperation base (characteristic category) by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2025. The base closely cooperates with the International Water Association (IWA), as well as universities and research institutions in the United States, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, South Korea and other countries. Its research covers technologies such as wastewater reclamation and reuse, rainwater harvesting and utilization, urban water body restoration and water environment improvement. It gathers international first-class water environment experts, takes the IWA Future City Research Program and Non-traditional Water Resources Research Program as the cooperation link, and carries out theoretical, technical and engineering demonstration research on water issues related to urban sustainable development, especially the utilization of urban non-traditional water resources, so as to build a world-class international cooperation base. Based in the non-ferrous metal industry, the center focuses on the preparation and processing of high-performance non-ferrous metal functional materials, carries out integrated collaborative research on the design, process, products and equipment of non-ferrous metal materials, and has formed distinctive advantages in the basic theory, key technologies and equipment research and development of advanced functional materials, high-performance non-ferrous metal materials and rare metal materials, effectively improving the original innovation capability and core competitiveness of non-ferrous metal materials preparation and processing. The Key Laboratory of Structural Engineering and Earthquake Resistance of the Ministry of Education relies on Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, was approved for project establishment in 2005 and passed the acceptance in 2008. Based in the western region and facing the whole country, the laboratory carries out systematic research around five major directions: new engineering materials and high-performance structures, protection and inheritance of ancient building structures, western rural and town buildings and green construction, structural toughness and intelligent disaster prevention, and intelligent diagnosis and long-life guarantee of engineering structures, with remarkable characteristic advantages. It has achieved a series of original achievements in the fields of earthquake resistance of 'heavy-load, long-span and complex' structures, safety assessment and performance improvement of ancient buildings, and durability theory of concrete structures, which have been adopted by many national and industry standards. The laboratory has an innovation team of the Ministry of Education, a national-level teaching team and multiple provincial-level innovation teams, with advanced scientific research conditions. The International Joint Laboratory of Low-Carbon Building Environment was approved for establishment by the Ministry of Education in 2023, led by Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, and jointly established with internationally renowned institutions such as Umeå University in Sweden and Aalto University in Finland. The laboratory focuses on three major directions: low-carbon construction in normal environment (such as attached ventilation theory and low-carbon transmission and distribution technology), safety guarantee in disaster environment (air guarantee theory and key equipment), and intelligentization of underground environment guarantee. It is led by Professor Li Angui, a national-level talent, as the Chinese director. The team has been awarded the 'Huang Danian-style Teacher Team of National Colleges and Universities', and has successively undertaken more than 100 scientific research projects such as the National Key R&D Program. The achievements have been applied to national major projects such as offshore floating nuclear power plants, Xiongan High-speed Railway Station, Xi'an T5 Terminal Building, Zhengzhou Metro Station and the world's largest hydropower project underground super-large complex cavern group. The attached ventilation technology has been selected into the 'National Key Promoted Low-Carbon Technology Catalogue' by five ministries and commissions. The laboratory has hosted many international academic conferences such as ROOMVENT and ISHVAC. The Shaanxi Provincial International Joint Research Center for Advanced Inorganic Non-metallic Materials relies on Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, and has high-level platforms such as the National & Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Ecological Building Materials, the Engineering Research Center of Ecological Cement of the Ministry of Education, and the Sino-UK Science Bridge Cement-based Materials Joint Laboratory. Facing the national strategies of 'Western Development', 'Belt and Road' Initiative and 'dual carbon' goal, the center focuses on the key scientific issues and major common technical problems in the field of advanced inorganic non-metallic materials, and carries out systematic research on the preparation, performance regulation and application of advanced inorganic non-metallic materials. It has a high-level academic team, and has undertaken a large number of national, provincial and ministerial key scientific research projects. The center has achieved a series of important scientific research achievements, which have been widely applied in the fields of ecological building materials, advanced ceramics and other fields, and has made important contributions to the high-quality development of the inorganic non-metallic materials industry in Shaanxi Province and the whole country.
