The School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering (SEME) traces its origins back to the Department of Sanitary Engineering, established in 1956 when the university was formed. It was renamed the Department of Environmental Engineering in 1980 and later the School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering in 1999. In 2002, the Environmental Engineering discipline was selected as one of the first batch of national key disciplines. In 2003, SEME was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering. In the fifth round of discipline evaluation conducted in 2020, the Environmental Science and Engineering discipline ranked among the top tier in China. Additionally, Environmental & Ecology and Biology & Biochemistry entered the top 1% of ESI global rankings. SEME has established a comprehensive, multi-level talent training system covering undergraduate, master, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs.
SEME currently has 170 faculty and staff members, including 127 full-time teachers (45 professors and 50 associate professors). It has built a high-level teaching team consisting of 11 national-level talents, including recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Changjiang Scholars, and leading talents of the "Ten Thousand Talents Program", as well as 69 provincial and ministerial-level talents. SEME hosts two national-level platforms of international cooperation and exchange, along with eight provincial/ministerial-level platforms of laboratories.
The school offers three undergraduate programs, Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science, all of which are national first-class undergraduate programs. Currently, there are 2,494 enrolled students, making it an important training base for environmental talents in China.
Addressing major national strategic needs, SEME has developed five distinctive research directions: water pollution control and water quality safety, membrane-based resource recycling, waste resource utilization, safe water system transportation, and low-carbon intelligent treatment. SEME has ranked among the top five nationally in the number of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) grants for three consecutive years, with total science and technology contract amounts reaching 209 million RMB. It has received two National Technological Invention Awards and three National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Through undertaking major national projects and industry-university-research collaborations, SEME has achieved a dual-drive model of theoretical innovation and technological breakthroughs. The novel environmental equipment and pollution control technologies developed have been widely applied in engineering practice, effectively addressing key technological bottlenecks in ecological and environmental protection in Northwest China. SEME has formed an integrated innovation model covering "basic research, technological breakthroughs, and outcome commercialization."
Looking to the future, SEME will accelerate the transformation and upgrading of its disciplines, continuously optimize talent training models, and effectively enhance its capacity to serve economic and social development, striving to build a high-level research-oriented environmental school.
