The College of Urban Development and Modern Transportation was established in May 2024 in response to the strategic needs of urban development and national transportation development. The College integrates the discipline of Transportation Engineering with the China Institute for Urban-Rural Development and Cultural Heritage and the Shaanxi Research Institute for New-Type Urbanization and Human Settlements.
The College offers three undergraduate programs: Transportation, Traffic Engineering, and Intelligent Transportation. Postgraduate education includes an academic master’s program in Transportation Engineering, a professional master’s program in Transportation, and a PhD program in Low-Altitude Technology and Intelligent Transportation Engineering.
With roots tracing back to 1952 through a curriculum introduced from the Moscow Architectural Engineering Institute, the Transportation program was designated a National First-class Program in 2020 and received accreditation from the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association (CEEAA) in 2023. It stands as the nation's sole program dedicated to integrated transportation planning and design.
The College has more than 70 faculty and staff members, nearly 30 of whom hold senior academic titles. The team is led by Professor ZHAO Xiangmo, President of Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology. Research areas include integrated transportation planning, smart transportation and urban spatial data, intelligent operation of transportation infrastructure, green urban transportation systems, and traffic safety and emergency management.
The College hosts premier research platforms, including a national-level think tank China Institute for Urban-Rural Development and Cultural Heritageand a provincial-level think tank Shaanxi Research Institute for New-Type Urbanization and Human Settlements. It also houses advanced laboratories such as the Shaanxi Provincial Engineering Research Center for Urban Public Transport Space Planning and Development and the Laboratory for Low-Altitude Technology and Intelligent Transportation Engineering.
