A Brief Introduction to Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology

The university has been authorized by the State Council to set up Graduate School. The present Graduate School has 29 doctoral degrees, 66 master programs, 4 post-doctoral circulation stations, 3 state-level key disciplines and 16 province-level key disciplines. 4 of the 29 doctoral degrees have been evaluated as state-level key disciplines. They are Civil Engineering, Environment Engineering, Management Engineering and Architecture. 4 post-doctoral circulation stations are Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environment Engineering and Material Science.

1. Academic programs open to international graduate students

Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology offer the following majors to international graduate students: structural engineering, rocky soil engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, disaster prevention & reduce and protection engineering, architecture history and theory, architecture design and theory, urban plan and design, architecture technology and science, environment engineering, municipal engineering, heat providing engineering, gas providing engineering, ventilation engineering, air-conditioning engineering, management science and engineering, material science, material process engineering, mechanical design and theory, etc.

2. Life and study environment

The university has special departments for foreign students. Each flat is equipped with separate washroom with shower, necessary furniture such as desk and wardrobe, indispensable domestic appliances such as color TV, refrigerator, air condition, washing machine and microwave oven. Each flat has set aside a network joint, which makes anytime cyber connection a possibility. Accommodation rate for single room is RMB80 per person per day. International students may have their meals in the university canteen and the rate is about RMB 20~50 per person per day.

The university owns beautiful campus overflowing with vigor. Cherry-blossom road, plane-tree road and silk-tree road are filled with flowers giving forth their fragrance. Lawn with an area of several thousand square meters is covered with ever-green plants. High-rise buildings such as the newly-built library, Yi-fu Venue, Powder-engineering Building and Environment-engineering building rise steeply from the ground. Enjoying fresh air on the campus, both students and faculty members sooth their spirit and compose their mind. Ancient city of Xi'an enjoys four seasons in sharp contrast and pleasant environment. As an ancient city with a history of more than 1,000 years, Xi'an has a variety of historical sites and scenic spots all around the city. Xi'an has convenient transports. International students can pay their visits to all these places and experience Chinese culture with a history of 5,000 years during their stay for study.

4. Application conditions

(1). Qualification of applicants:
Foreign citizens who aim to pursue a master's or doctoral degree and meet the qualifications as follows may apply to Graduate School of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology and ask for a Foreigner's Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology or download it. Requirements for applicant's age and academic background are:

a. Applicants for master's program should have a bachelor's degree or equivalent academic background at the age below 40 years old.
b. Applicants for doctoral program should have a master's degree or equivalent academic background at the age below 45 years old.
c. General trainee should have a bachelor's degree or equivalent academic background at the age below 45 years old.
d. Advanced trainee should have a master's degree or equivalent academic background at the age below 50 years old.

(2). Materials to be submitted:
a. The completed Foreigner's Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology with photos of the same photographic plate as in the passport.
b. Registration fee.
c. Certification of the highest academic degree.
d. The original or the photocopy of Bachelor's or Master's report card of relevant courses.
e. Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorships or higher.
f. Applicant's resume.
g. Financial guarantee written out by guarantee, with attached original or photocopy of bank certification.
All the above materials are required to be written in Chinese or English and one copy should be submitted to Graduate School. Candidates who cannot provide Chinese or English materials may attach two copies of notarized Chinese or English version. Applicants outside China mail their application forms together with registration fee (US Dollars) by personal cheque or bill or traveller's cheque. Applicants in China remit registration fee (RMB) to the following bank account:

(3). Application period:
a. Applicants for master's program: Applications closed on October 31 every year.
b. Applicants for doctoral program: Applications closed on October 31 every year.
c. General trainee and advanced trainee: all year around.

5. Entrance examination and admission

The university has two enrollment patterns for international applicants: one is the enrollment based on negotiation and the other is the public enrollment through examination. Applicants for master's or doctorial degrees via inter-university exchange negotiation of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology will be examined according to the negotiation rules. Public enrollment through examination observes the following procedure:

Preliminary examination: International applicants for master's degrees are required to take the examinations of English and two professional courses relevant to the majors. International applicants for doctorial degrees are required to take the examinations of English and two professional courses relevant to the majors. Applicants whose native tongue or official language is English can be exempted from the English examination. Examination courses can be found in the current-year major catalogue. All the above courses are 3-hour written examinations. Time and place of preliminary examination are based on the examination notice.

Final examination: Qualified applicants in preliminary examination are required to take final examination arranged by the university. Time, place, content and style of final examination are defined by the university and will be listed in the final examination notice.

International applicants for training programs can be admitted as long as the university approve after checking.

6. Matriculation and registration

Admitted students should take personal passport, admission notice of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, JW202 form and physical examination record to the local China embassy to apply for visa to China (X or F visa). The students should take the above original materials to register at the university at the required time shown on the admission notice and pay tuition fee. Exception can be made to students who have informed the university of their special reasons and whose delay has been permitted.

After registration, students will be reexamined by the university. Those unqualified students in reexamination will be deprived of their admissions.

7. Study period and degree award

Master's programs: 2 or 3 years.

Doctoral programs: 3 or 4 years.

A degree student who has completed all courses according to schedule and the total credit hours will be awarded a diploma as well as a master' and doctor's degree certificate in accordance with the Academic Degree Regulations of the People's Republic of China. One who has failed to meet the academic requirements, or has not been granted the qualification of thesis defence, or has failed in thesis defence, or has not been granted graduation certificate, will be treated as trainee or the one who discontinues his schooling.

Study period for Trainees is no more than 2 years. Trainees who have completed training programs will be awarded training graduation certificates.

8. International students should pay their own expenses including accommodation, health, insurance, board and teaching materials.

9. International students should pay the expenses of experiment, practice, major visits beyond training plans.
