School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering

With a history of fifty-five years, the School of Environment and Municipal Engineering grew out of the department of Public Health Engineering established in 1956. Presently there are 108 faculty members, including 23 professors, 28 associate professors and 20 doctoral supervisors; most of the academic staffs hold doctorate degrees. There are now 750 undergraduates, 763 master's degree candidates, 124 doctoral students and 4 postdoctorate fellows. The school has an innovative teaching team authorized by the Ministry of Education with its core teachers, who are members of the State Council Academic Evaluation Committee, scholars, enjoying the State Council allowance, and are members of the National New Century Talents Project, New Century Talents Supporting Plan of the Ministry of Education, and the Third Five Talents of Shaanxi Province.

There are four specialties for undergraduates: Building Environment and Facility Engineering, Water and Wastewater Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science. Among them, Building Environment and Facility Engineering, Water and Wastewater Engineering and Environmental Engineering have been authorized by the Ministry of Education as national distinctive specialties and also provincially famous specialties. Water and Wastewater Engineering has been ratified by the Ministry of Education and is among the first specialties nominated for the national program of "Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Plan". The school has undertaken many national education and teaching projects, such as the National Teaching team, the National Innovative Experimental Zone of Talent Cultivation Mode, the National Exemplary Center of laboratory Education and the National Excellence in bilingual teaching demonstration courses and other nationally distinctive courses.

Currently, it is the only school in the 12 provinces of western China which has a national key discipline in the area of environmental engineering and has the right to confer doctorate degrees in the disciplines of environmental engineering, heating ventilating and air conditioning, municipal engineering, environmental science and environmental materials respectively. The discipline of environmental science and engineering has the right to confer doctorate degrees. The school also has a first-level post-doctorate research program of civil engineering and environmental science and engineering. There are also key laboratories authorized by the Ministry of Education and Shaanxi Province. As a whole, the school has the capacity of fulfilling teaching and education programs at all levels for undergraduates, masters' students, doctoral and post-doctoral students, which shows that the School of Environment and Municipal Engineering is among the top disciplines in China.

In recent years, the School of Environment and Municipal Engineering has undertaken more than forty important national key projects, including national major projects--water pollution control, major projects of the Natural Science Foundation of China, national 973 projects, national 863 projects, projects from the National Science and Technology Supporting Plan and international cooperation projects. The School of Environment and Municipal Engineering has gained a number of innovative research results, and has made a great contribution to economic development and environmental protection, both regionally and nationally.
