School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering

School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (MEE), derived from the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, founded in 1960, was established in 1998. After generations’ of endeavor in the past half century, the MEE has developed tremendously in rank and scale.

The school is empowered to grant bachelor’s degrees in two specialties: mechanical design, manufacture & automation and electrical engineering and automation; master’s degrees in 4 specialties: machinery theory and design, mechatronic engineering, mechanical design, manufacture & automation, and vehicle engineering, and doctoral degrees in the specialty of machinery theory and design, which is also the key specialty in Shaanxi Province. These programs are offered to over 600 undergraduates, over 150 postgraduates, and 20-plus PhD candidates. So far, this school has cultivated many outstandingly talented young people, with both ability and political integrity, who are now serving as the mainstay in different ministries, commissions, enterprises or public institutions.

The MEE has a faculty and staff of 108, with 10 full professors and 23 associate professors. There are 6 distinguished visiting professors, one of whom is the academician for the Chinese Academy of Science, and another, the academician for the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The number of supervisors of master degree candidates totals 39.

After many years of development and accumulation, the school has established distinguished characteristics in 6 research areas, namely, analysis of kinematics and dynamics in mechanical systems, theoretical approach and application of mechanical engineering, research of forming technology and micro-nano manufacturing, dynamic monitor of mechanical & electrical fluid system and diagnostic research, advanced manufacturing technology and information technology, research of technology in vehicle intelligence information processing and structural reliability. Also worth noting is that the Chinese Committee of Vibration Application Engineering is resident here.

In recent years, the MEE has achieved a great deal in terms of discipline construction. At present, there are 8 research institutes, namely, the Engineering Research Center of Wear-Resistant Materials and the Technology subordinated to the Ministry of Education, the Research Center of Wear-Resistant Materials Engineering and Application ratified by Shaanxi Province, the provincial key laboratory of Nano Materials and Technology, the Center of Wear-Resistant Materials and Technology affiliated to the 13115 Scientific and Technological Innovation Project of Shaanxi Province, the Institute of Wear-Resistant Materials of XAUAT, the Institute of Construction Machinery of XAUAT, the Institute of Mechatronic Engineering of XAUAT, and the Institute of Vibration Technology and Application of XAUAT, all of which are dedicated to researching problems in manufacturing, and to ardently infusing the latest academic achievements with industrial application. Some technologically-intensive enterprises and bases nurturing new technologies and new products were also established, and the total cumulative output value of the industry now totals 650 million RMB.

The MEE has accomplished a great deal in scientific research. During the past 5 years, the school has either managed or participated in almost 100 projects, such as the ones supported by the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 Program), the National Key Technology R & D Program of China during the 10th Five-Year Plan Period, or by the National Fund for Natural Science, and many other provincial-level projects, for which 56.8 million RMB was allocated as the research fund, including 27.2 million RMB for research projects and 60 million RMB for collaboration projects with the enterprises. More than 10 prizes have been awarded for the research progress in MEE, such as the second prize of Shaanxi Province Technological Progress, the first prize of Shaanxi Province Patented Invention and the first and second prizes of National Technological Progress. At the same time, 528 papers, along with 32 pieces of work and teaching materials have also been published. The MEE has also obtained 122 patent permissions, including 34 patented inventions, many of which have been put into practice,.

The school makes great efforts to enhance academic exchange and international cooperation with universities or institutes, both at home and abroad. The MEE cooperates with universities in such countries as Great Britain, Germany, the United States, and Japan. Given this platform for communication with the related experts and scholars, the school is able to keep track of the latest developments in the field. Meanwhile, as the executive member of the Chinese Committee of Vibration Application Engineering, and of the Chinese Committee of Concrete Mechanical Engineering, the school has been organizing or hosting related conferences, to further its contribution in the advancement and exchange in the field.
In the past five years, graduate students in MEE have published more than 400 academic papers, among which more than 40 were cited in SCI and EI, and have obtained over 20 national patents and scholarships from governments at various levels and from enterprises. For example, during his PhD studies, Liu Daohua, a PhD student who graduated in 2009, won more than 10 scholarships. Liu Bo, whose Master’s Degree was conferred in 2010, won the title of “Excellent Graduate Student in Shaanxi Province”. Adhering to its discipline characteristics, the MEE has been making unremitting efforts to cultivate and produce all-round-developed professionals.

As a natural result, the graduates from MEE are well-received in related enterprises or research institutes, and the school has been recognized for its work several times with the title of “Excellent Unit in the Employment of Graduates”, with an average ratio of supply and demand within the graduate population being 1:5 or above. In the past years, the employment rate as remained consistently at 100%.
